Shallow Grave
Background
Shallow Grave was released on the 17th of May 1994. It was written by John Hodge and directed by Danny Boyle, who also worked on Trainspotting.
Plot
Accountant David, physician Juliet and journalist Alex share a flat and hold interviews to recruit a new roommate. They settle on Hugo, who, unbeknownst to the three roommates, is involved in shady business deals. The next day, they find Hugo dead in his room with a suitcase full of money under his bed. The trio decide to keep the money and bury the body, David being given the task of dismembering him. This has an effect on him, and the film goes from black comedy to psychological thriller.
Main Characters
Alex Law (Ewan McGregor) |
David Stevens (Christopher Eccleston) |
Juliet Miller (Kerry Fox) |
Alex is a confident and outgoing journalist. He is the one who convinces Juliet and David to keep the money and bury the body in the first place, so I guess we can blame him for what happens to David by the end of the movie. He also looks stunning in a dress. |
David is unsure and quiet in the beginning of the movie, but it's almost as if dismembering Hugo awakens something in him which makes him... spoilers, sorry. |
Juliet seems to be the only normal among the three until you get to know her. She is in the wrong for choosing Hugo as a roommate in the first place. |
Thoughts
Plot twist after plot twist after plot twist. I was interested in this movie after watching Trainspotting because of Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor's work together. The shift from black comedy to thriller sends shivers down your spine. I was not disappointed in watching this movie and is one of my favourite thrillers of all time, right behind Mindhunters and Speed.
