The Net is a short-lived TV series from 1998 based on the original 1995 movie of the same name starring Sandra Bullock.

Plot

Angela Bennett, a programmer, gets her identity stolen by a group of cyber-terrorists called The Praetorians. She is now labeled as a wanted criminal and seeks out The Praetorians with the help of a mysterious online hacker, Sorcerer.

Characters

Angela Bennett (Brooke Langton)

Jacob Resh/Sorcerer (Eric Szmanda)

The Praetorians (Joseph Bottoms, Mackenzie Gray, Kelli Taylor)

The protagonist who is labeled as criminal Liz Marx by The Praetorians. Angela is actually a really forgiving character, and you sort of feel for her in the beginning, and mid-way through the series you sort of forget she's supposed to be some sort of wanted criminal. She is played by Brooke Langt n who you might recognise from The Replacements with Keanu Reeves.

Somewhat of a spoiler character, Sorcerer originally shows up on Angela's computer as just a voice, played by Tim Curry of all people. In episode 10, Angela is upset to discover that Sorcerer is in fact Jacob Resh, a 16 year old kid who lives with his grandmother "with a bad bleach job" (direct quote from Angela). Yes, he is played by the same Eric Szmanda who plays Greg Sanders in CSI: Las Vegas.

Just awful people. The worst part is we don't even know why The Praetorians wnat Angela or any of the other people they go after in the first place.

Thoughts

When I was going through my CSI phase, I was searching around to see what other movies and series the actors from the show were in, and I found this because Eric acted in it. To be honest, I still haven't watched the original movie with Sandra Bullock, and as much as I love her, I kinda don't want to, because I think it will ruin the novelty of the TV show. It gives me the same vibes as Hackers, you know the late-90s cyber-hacker aesthetic seen in Hackers and The Matrix. In fact I made a meme about how Jacob and Dade are like the same person. The fun part about the series is that it's pretty much free to watch on the Internet Archive here. Unfortunately, the episodes are out of order, so you'll be watching the episodes all over the place.
