HACKERS

Background

Hackers was released on the 15th of December 1995. It was directed by Iain Softley and written by Rafael Moreu.

Plot

Dade Murphy (Zero Cool) is the cause of crashing 1507 computers at the age of 11 and is banned from using a computer until he turns 18. Him and his mother move to New York, where Dade meets a gang of hackers who are willing to induct him as part of their group because of his skill. One of the hackers, Joey, hacks into a system named Gibson and copies garbage files. The Plague, antagonist of the movie, seeks him and the rest of the group out to arrest them. It is up to Dade and his crew to defeat The Plague and override his system.

Main Characters

Dade Murphy/Crash Override/Zero Cool (Jonny Lee Miller*)

Kate Libby/Acid Burn (Angelina Jolie)

Dade has only two things on his mind at all times; hacking and boning Kate. He's both smart and dumb at the same time, because he knows how to hack, but doesn't know how to function like a human being.

Kate is amazing but she's almost as bad as Dade, which is probably why they get along so well. Her mom writes books that give women very toxic perceptions of men, but she gives into Dade anyway without being weary at all.

Ramon Sanchez/The Phantom Phreak (Renoly Santiago)

Joey Pardella (Jesse Bradford)

Emmanuel Goldstein/Cereal Killer (Matthew Lillard)

So criminally underrated I forgot his name after the first watch. Ramon is a really cool character and, not gonna lie, he feels kind of fruity to me. The fact that he isn't written to show interest in women like the rest of the boys in the hacker group also solidifies that. He also seems to be the only voice of reason.

Joey just wants to be recognised as a real hacker, but is so dumb that he never takes any precautions before doing anything. I'm surprised he doesn't get arrested by the end of the movie.

"His parents missed Woodstock and he's been making up for it ever since." That quote pretty much sums up Cereal as a character. Cereal is just so out there and it's probably because he's played by Matthew Lillard, which makes sense.

Paul Cook/Lord Nikon (Laurence Mason)

Eugene Belford/The Plague (Fisher Stevens)

Nikon's only character aspect is having a photographic memory, and while it helps when it comes to hacking, he uses it for creepy reasons, like memorising a girl's phone number and ADDRESS. Other than that, Nikon is one of the coolest characters.

Eugene comes off as one of those kids that are like, "moooOOOOOoooom don't call me Eugeneeee, my name is THE PLAGUEEEE". He is one of the uncoolest characters in this movie, and I'm not just saying that because he's the villain.

Thoughts

The best worst movie I've ever seen. Hackers is such an awfully done movie that it comes off as almost genius. It's an insane first role for Angelina Jolie, and to think this is one of the movies that jumpstarted her career is just wild. Also, I have a bone to pick with this movie. COMPUTER SCREENS DON'T JUST PROJECT WHAT'S ON THE SCREEN ON TO PEOPLE'S FACES LIKE THAT! COMPUTERS DON'T WORK LIKE THAT!
