Josie and the Pussycats

Background

Josie and the Pussycats was released on the 11th of April 2001. It was written and directed by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont.

Plot

After the death of a hit boyband, record producer Wyatt Frame is tasked by owner of Mega Records, Fiona, to find a new band. Small-town band from Riverdale, The Pussycats, is soon discovered by Wyatt Frame and taken back to Mega Records where they become the biggest band in the world in the span of a week. After being renamed to Josie and the Pussycats, the band soon discovers the dark secret behind their fame and fortune - subliminal messaging.

Main Characters

Josie McCoy (Rachel Leigh Cook)

Valerie Brown (Rosario Dawson)

Melody Valentine (Tara Reid)

Josie is the lead singer of Josie and the Pussycats. She's head over heels in love with Alan M. and is weary when the band starts to gain a massive following.

Valerie seems to always be left out of conversations (it's because she's a bassist isn't it) which means she catches on that something is off very quickly.

Melody is clueless and is an addition to my list of favourite bimbos. She's absolutely adorable because of her love for all things innocent.

Wyatt Frame (Alan Cumming)

Fiona (Parker Posey)

Wyatt is basically Fiona's bitch. He does all her dirty work but willingly. Also, this was the second time I was confused about Alan Cumming's true nationality.

Fiona is grand, spectacular, flamboyant... freakish, controlling and probably a criminal. She works with the FBI to brainwash the youth of America.

Soundtrack

This movie is based on music, so I decided to include the soundtrack here. Backdoor Lover and Pretend To Be Nice are bops.

Thoughts

My theory for why this movie tanked in 2001 but is becoming a major hit nowadays is that back then, their target audience didn't see the problem with what the writers were critising so the movie didn't come off as satire and nobody got the joke. Nowadays we can look back at a movie of its time and go "Holy shit, were we really okay with all that product placement?" That being said, JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER, YOU WILL WATCH IT, YOU WANNA WATCH IT SO BAD, GO BUY DOC MARTENS AND MACDONALDS
